The player will fight through the Badniks enemies, such as Caterkillers, Moto Bugs, Buzz Bombers and Bloominators, while dealing sevearl hazards, such as avoiding the buzz saws popping out of the ground, riding on conveying belts and standing on the green platform that will flip the player underneath if they stand on it too long, which usually leads to the bed of spikes or the acid river in the bottom. The first area is based on Scrap Brain Zone Act 1 from Sonic 1 as it takes place outside of the mechanical city with the Death Egg sitting on the land in the background above the red polluted sky and acid river in the bottom.
